About our staff

Judy Erickson is currently foreman of the internationally acclaimed Orion Longsword and past member of Muddy River Morris.  She's been on staff for several Pinewoods weeks, both with CDSS and the CDS-Boston Center.  Her compelling and evocative choreographies for longsword, blending American movement and musical themes with traditional elements, are revolutionizing the genre.  We are fortunate to have her teaching these two special workshops.

Noel Cragg is one of the Bay Area's most excellent display dance musicians.  He's played for a number of local morris teams as well as a number of bands at regular dance series.  A man of many musical talents, he studied at Oberlin Conservatory, participating in many early music and baroque ensembles.

About Longsword

The traditional 28 notated English longsword dances mostly originate from the old county of Yorkshire. Characteristically, each dancer holds the handle of their own sword in their right hand and the point of their neighbour's in their left, making a linked ring of 6 to 8 dancers; they perform a series of `figures' passing over or under the swords and finish by tying the swords in a `lock' or `rose'. The figures from some dances can be very complex (sometimes the ring is broken into pairs or trios of dancers and then reformed for the next figure) whilst variations of some of the more simple figures are seen in most dances.

About the Hall

  • Goat Hall is located at 400 Missouri, near 19th Street, in the Potrero Hill area of San Francisco, with parking available on the street.  You can also check out the interactive Goat Hall.

  • For those using public transit, the nearest BART station is 16th & Mission, and you'll likely need the Muni Route #22 bus to get to the hall.  If you're using Caltrain, you can walk from the 22nd Street station (although there are some steep hills along the way).

  • The school has no drink facilities of its own, so it might be wise to bring something to drink.  We'll try to provide a cooler with beverages, but there are also stores a short walk from the hall.

What should I bring?

  • Loose casual clothing to dance in.  You might consider a towel and an extra shirt.  Shoes with good support like trainers or jogging shoes.  You need sticky shoes for the first workshop, but both sticky and hard sole shoes if you're doing the second.

  • If you already do Morris dancing and have longswords, please bring them.  However, if you have don't have these (or you have no idea what I'm talking about), don't worry - we'll have extras there - you'll be fine.

  • Be sure to include water if you think you'll need it.  We will schedule breaks but facilities will be limited.  We'll try to cart along a cooler of drinks.
